Christen Hansen Smidt, born 1641 and dead 1706, the earliest known of the Smidt family in Norway. He was fogd in Gudbrandsdalen, then in 1681 was appointed slottsfogd at Akershus, the bailiff of the castle, and bailiff of Aker and Follo with it, and moved down from the valley to the fortress. In 1683 he was also made rådmann, a councillor, of Christiania.

In January 1674 he married Else Jensdatter Plade, daughter of the bailiff Jens Paulsen Plade. He was thirty three and she was eighteen. Their first years were spent in Gudbrandsdalen and three or four of the children were born there; the rest came after the move. Peder, the fifth, was born in 1682 and baptized in the castle chapel at Akershus, and became bailiff of Idd and Marker in his turn.

The Stattholdergården in Rådhusgaten was for a long time run by the bailiff and his brother in law Gregers Plade jointly. And in 1687, six years into the Akershus appointment, he and his wife sat for their portraits.
