Clarence Oliver Hartung
Clarence Oliver Hartung was born on 11 April 1921 at Morrison, in Noble County, Oklahoma. He was the youngest son of John Adam Hartung and Etta Pearl Harlow. His father had come to Noble County from Kansas in 1907 and farmed near Morrison.
In 1930 the family lived in Autry Township of Noble County. Clarence was eight. His sister Gertrude, nineteen, and his brother Claude, sixteen, were still at home. He went to school at Glencoe, just over the line in Payne County, and was enrolled there in 1930, 1933 and 1934. In 1940 he was nineteen and still on his parents' farm in Autry Township.
He registered for the draft at Morrison on 12 February 1942. He served in the United States Army in the Second World War, in Japan, as a military policeman. A record of his service gives an induction at Oklahoma City on 1 October 1946, from Noble County.
He married Clara Marie Sappington, who had grown up on a farm in the same township. His obituary gives the wedding as 1 February 1946 at Wellington, Kansas, just over the state line; hers gives 1 February 1948. They lived at Morrison and later moved to Pawnee. In April 1950 the census found them in Autry Township: Clarence, 29, Clara M., 23, and their son Jimmie R., born in 1949. A girl of seventeen, Jane H. Haynes, lived with them.
Their children were Jimmie R. in 1949, Lucky L. in 1950, Mary Ellen on 28 May 1952 and Pearlie Lee. In February 1957 Pearlie Lee, then a small girl, was in the hospital at Perry with pneumonia. A Pawnee paper noted it among the visits and illnesses of the week.
In March 1957 Clarence drove his mother and his sister Gladys Hostutler to Enid, where his father had just had surgery. His father died at Perry in June 1958 and left his eyes to the new Oklahoma Lions eye bank. Clarence was named among the survivors as Clarence Hartung of Morrison.
In September 1980 Clarence and Clara Hartung of Morrison both came to a reunion of the old country schools of Noble County. They were listed together under the Jefferson school.
Their daughter Mary Ellen married Billy Earl Saunders in June 1970, and the couple settled at Morrison two years later.
After the war he farmed for Clark Fields and pumped on an oil lease. He then worked as a mechanic for Howard Stengle and Jack Greer until he retired. He belonged to the Oklahoma Steam and Tractor association and the American Legion.
Clarence died on Friday, 30 April 1993, at the Veterans Administration hospital in Oklahoma City. He was 72 and lived on route one, Pawnee. His funeral was held the following Tuesday at the First United Methodist church at Morrison, with Dan Duncan, its pastor, officiating. He is buried in Grace Hill Cemetery at Perry under a bronze veteran's marker: CLARENCE O HARTUNG, US ARMY, WORLD WAR II, APR 11 1921, APR 30 1993. Marie survived him by two years and lies near him.
