Clarissa Reed, known as Clara, was born on 28 September 1856 in Portland Township, Erie County, Ohio, the township that holds the city of Sandusky. The county birth register names her parents as Stephen Reed and Nancy Hogland.

She married Charles Henry Everett, four years younger, who had grown up in Green Creek Township around Clyde. Their children included Stephen in 1882, Anna Augusta in 1884, William in 1885, Leon and Leyona in 1893, and Louis, with another daughter who later married Ralph David.

Charles died on Christmas Eve 1900. Clara was forty four, with the youngest children about seven. She lived as a widow for thirty two years in and around Sandusky and saw her daughter Anna married to Edward J. Heiberger in 1902. She died at Sandusky on 6 January 1933, aged seventy six, and was buried beside Charles in Oakland Cemetery under a stone marked MOTHER, with "Gone but not forgotten" carved on it.
