Clark Henry Short
Clark Henry Short was born on 13 July 1893 in Lee Township, in the northwest corner of Calhoun County, Michigan. He registered for the World War I draft in Calhoun County in 1917 or 1918.
He served as a private in Company A of the 116th Infantry, 29th Division. The 116th was a Virginia National Guard regiment. The 29th was called the Blue and Gray Division because its men came from both Northern and Southern states. The army filled its ranks with drafted men from across the country before it sailed for France in June 1918. The division fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive in October 1918, the last great battle of the war. The government's file on Clark Short as a veteran dates his service to 1919, the year he came home.
He married Minnie Laurie Davenport, who was thirteen years younger than he was. Their children were Flora Jane, Clarice Jean, Clark Keith, Lillian Jeanetta and Madora, born over seventeen years. He farmed in Clarence Township, in the northeast corner of the county, north of Albion. He registered again for the draft there in 1942, at forty-eight. In the census of 3 April 1950 he was 56 and still farming, with Minnie, 42, and the three youngest children, Clark Keith, Jeanetta and Madora, at home.
Clark Henry Short died on 31 October 1961, aged 68. He is buried in Clarence Center Cemetery under a government veteran's stone: "Clark Henry Short, Michigan, Pvt Co A 116 Inf 29 Div, World War I, July 13 1893, Oct 31 1961."
