Madora D. Short
Madora D. Short was born at Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan, on 2 January 1942. Her parents were Clark Henry Short, a farmer and World War I veteran, and Minnie Laurie Davenport. She was the youngest of their children, born seventeen years after the eldest. Her father was 48 when she was born.
She grew up on her father's farm in Clarence Township, in the northeast corner of Calhoun County, north of Albion. On 3 April 1950 the census taker found the family there: Clark Short, 56, farming; Minnie, 42; Clark Keith, 16; Jeanetta, 13; and Madora, 8. Her older sisters Flora and Clarice had already left home.
In March 1959, at seventeen, she applied for a Social Security number while living at Albion. She named her parents as Clark H. Short and Minnie L. Davenport. Her father died in October 1961, when she was nineteen, and was buried at Clarence Center Cemetery. Her mother married again, to Michael Nolan Kellogg.
Madora was married more than once, and Dittis is one of the surnames she carried. She later married Frank Marvin Hopkins, a Missouri man twenty-one years older than she was, who had come to Calhoun County in the 1950s. Their son Michael was born in Michigan in 1974.
Madora D. Hopkins died at Albion on 19 June 1999, aged 57, three months after Frank. She was buried at Albion Memory Gardens. Her flat granite marker carries a pair of praying hands between the dates: "Madora D. Hopkins, Jan. 2nd 1942, June 19th 1999."
