Closs T. Jones
Closs T. Jones was born in Kentucky in about 1792. He farmed on Hinkston Creek in Montgomery County, in the Bluegrass east of Lexington. The clerks wrote his name Closs I. Jones, Closs T. Jones and C. T. Jones, and the 1850 census taker's long "ss" was later read as "Clop".
In 1848 and 1849 he was buying land along the creek. On 1 March 1849 he paid Thomas F. Jones of Bath County $2,210.43 for a tract. He also served as guardian of a boy named David Waldom, whose accounts were settled in 1855.
In 1850 he was fifty eight. His wife Permelia R. was thirty nine. At home were Benjamin F., Spencer F., Emily J., Hiram, Mary W. and Lydia M. His daughter Elizabeth had married George Washington Dale in 1849 and lived nearby with her husband and baby. Whether Permelia was Elizabeth's mother is not recorded.
Elizabeth died young, sometime after 1854 and before October 1859, and George took his family to Texas. Her father died in the same years. By the autumn of 1859 his widow and heirs had petitioned the county court for her dower and the division of his land and slaves.
Commissioners walked the farm on 3 October 1859. It came to 195 acres. They gave Permelia sixty eight acres north of the road, with the mansion house, and cut the rest into seven lots of about seventeen acres, one for each child. Elizabeth's lot went to her two little daughters, Mary Jane and Elizabeth Frances, called Fanny. The slaves were valued and shared the same way.
The deeds were made in April 1860. One of them conveys lot No. 3 to "Mary Jane & Elizabeth Francis Dale Infant heirs of Washington and Elizabeth Dale formerly Elizabeth Jones being now deceased." Mary Jane later married David Rittenhouse Myres in Texas.
