Elizabeth Jones

Elizabeth Jones was born in Kentucky in about 1829. Her father was Closs T. Jones, a farmer of Bath County and later of Hinkston Creek in Montgomery County. Her mother was very probably Permelia Bridges, whom Closs married in Bath County on 3 January 1828. No record names Elizabeth's mother. But Elizabeth was born about a year after that wedding, she named a daughter Permelia, and her father's estate treated her children exactly like his other heirs. Her sister Lydia's death certificate names Lydia's parents as Closs T. Jones and Pamela Bridges.

She grew up with six brothers and sisters: Benjamin F., Spencer F., Emily Jane, Hiram, Mary W. and Lydia. Benjamin was born in about 1829, the same year as she was. In about 1841 the family moved from Bath County to Montgomery County.

She married George Washington Dale, by a compiled account in March 1849 in Bath County. Their daughter Mary Jane was born that autumn. The 1850 census finds her at twenty one in Montgomery County, Kentucky, with George and the baby. A second daughter, Elizabeth Frances, called Fanny, was born in about 1851. In 1854 she bore a daughter in Bath County and named her Permelia. The county's birth register names the child's parents as G. W. Dale and Elizabeth Jones.

She died young, before October 1859. She does not appear in the family's 1860 household in Texas, where George had a new wife. In 1859 the Montgomery County court divided her father's land among his heirs and called her "Elizabeth Dale decd late Elizabeth Jones." Her seventh share went to her daughters Mary Jane and Fanny, the only two of her children the court named.

The girls' inheritance stayed in Kentucky for years. A William Dale was their guardian there until 1864. Their share in a slave named Hubbard was sold under a decree of the circuit court, and their seventeen acres were sold and then sold again in 1863. In 1866 their father came up from Texas as their guardian and took what was left. Mary Jane married David Rittenhouse Myres in Texas that December.
