Col. Dudley Bradstreet

b. 1648 · Andover MA
Born 1648, Andover, Massachusetts
Children include Margaret

Col. Dudley Bradstreet was born at Andover, Massachusetts, about 1648. He was a son of Gov. Simon Bradstreet and his wife Anne, the daughter of Gov. Thomas Dudley. His mother is remembered as the first poet published from the English colonies in America. The Tyler genealogy of 1912 says he was born in the Bradstreet House at Andover.

He married Ann Wood, the widow of Theodore Price. The Andover town records list three of their children: Dudley, born on 27 April 1678; Margarett, born on 19 February 1679/80; and Anne, born on 5 November 1681.

He was a justice at Andover, and his title of colonel was a militia rank. In 1692 the witchcraft accusations reached Andover. He stopped signing warrants for the arrest of the accused, and was then accused himself. The Tyler genealogy puts it this way: "He was the first person to breast and mark a turning point to the dreadful delusion of witchcraft."

His estate was in administration by 1708. His son-in-law Job Tyler, who married Margaret, administered the goods the earlier administrators had not dealt with, under a bond of £400, in Salem probate case 3068. The Tyler genealogy says that "His only living descendants are those tracing through the children of his daughter Margaret and her husband Job Tyler."
