Coleman Uriah Coombes
Coleman Uriah Coombes was born on 13 July 1850 at Harrisonville in Shelby County, Kentucky, the eldest child of William Henry Coombes and Catherine Haws. When he was about eight the family moved to Macon County in north central Missouri, and he grew up there. His father went into the 42nd Missouri Infantry, a Union regiment, in the last winter of the war.
On 22 February 1874 he married Delphine Elmore in Adair County, the next county north, where her father John Smith Elmore farmed at Gibbs. The county clerk entered him as Uriah C. Combs. Soon after the wedding they tried Smith County in north western Kansas, where their first children were born, and then came back to Missouri: their son Everett was born at Gibbs in 1889. By 1900 they had settled in Liberty Township, Cowley County, Kansas, where the census found Uriah L. Coombs, born July 1850 in Kentucky, married 26 years, with Delphine and the children Leatha L., Wibbie H., Evert E., Charlie W., Samuel F. and Bertha D. He farmed all his life. Eleven children were born to them, of whom three died young: Ida Mae and Cora Frances both in 1880, and Elmer Nevada in 1897.
He died at Winfield on 15 February 1936, aged 85; the stone he shares with Delphine at Akron Cemetery in Fairview Township gives the year as 1937. His son Everett's second wife Pearl was buried in the same cemetery in 1944.
