Conrad John Hemker
Conrad John Hemker was born in St. Louis on September 12, 1881, the third of the four known children of Casper Hemker, a German immigrant who worked as a roller in a rolling mill and later as a day laborer, and Mary Schulte, also born in Germany. The 1900 census shows him at eighteen in his parents' household.
His death certificate answers the armed forces question with a yes and one word, SPAW, the government's name for the service period under which it filed his enlistment at St. Louis in March 1902. On January 9, 1907 he married Agnes Hercules in St. Louis, a city-born daughter of a Bohemian mother and a German-blooded father. Five children came between 1908 and 1923: Agnes, Conrad, Alberta, Marie and Helen Rose.
He spent his working life as a letter carrier for the United States Post Office, and at the end the family lived on the south side, at 7111 Pennsylvania Avenue. He died June 3, 1956 at the Veterans Administration Hospital on North Grand, of a massive cerebral infarction, aged seventy-four, and was buried on June 7 in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Agnes joined him there eight years later.
