Alberta Hercules Hemker
Alberta Hercules Hemker was born in St. Louis on March 31, 1918, the third of the five children of Conrad J. Hemker, a postal carrier, and Agnes Hercules. Her grandfather Albert Hercules, a retired clerk of the city's Justice of the Peace office, had died on March 24, seven days before she arrived. She was given the feminine of his name and, by the family's record of her, his surname for a middle name.
She grew up on the south side in her parents' household and on November 11, 1939, at twenty-one, married Andrew C. Stackle. The 1940 census finds the couple lodging with a widow named Josephine Frost in Ward 11. Seven children followed between 1940 and 1951, the last of them Helen. The family's later home was 4426 Minnesota Avenue, and it was from that address that Alberta signed her mother's death certificate in January 1964.
She was widowed in April 1991 and lived another twenty years, staying in the 63111 neighborhoods of south St. Louis until about 2008, then near Crestwood. She died July 24, 2011, aged ninety-three, and is buried with Andrew at Resurrection Cemetery, Affton, Section 43, Lot 1065.
