Cornelia M. Beck was born at Louisville, Kentucky, on 19 April 1901, the daughter of George Beck, a butcher, and Bertha Butch. Her mother died while she was a girl.
On 8 June 1916 she crossed the Ohio River to Jeffersonville, Indiana, with Charles H. Finley, a Louisville brass polisher, and married him. On the license she wrote her name as Carmelia and her birth as 19 April 1898, which made her eighteen. Every later record gives 1901, which would have made her fifteen. She named her father as George Beck, born in Louisville, a butcher, and her mother as Bertha Butch, born in Louisville, and against her mother's residence the clerk wrote "Dead". By about 1921 they were living in Sandusky, Ohio, where she bore nine children.
In 1940 she was thirty eight, keeping a house of eleven in Ward 3 of Sandusky. Her children then were Ruth, Charles E., Georgetta, Robert, James, Frieda, Jack, Milina Irene and Marilyn, aged nineteen down to one.
Charles was taken ill on 29 October 1941 and died at Good Samaritan Hospital before dawn the next morning, of heart failure. Cornelia gave the particulars for his death certificate, signing as Mrs. Chas. Finley. She was forty, with a two year old at home. In April 1950 she was still in Sandusky heading her own household, with Frieda, Marilyn, Robert, Jack and a daughter listed as Wilma. In 1952 her son Jack named her on his marriage record by her maiden name, Cornelia Beck.
She never remarried. She died at Pickerington, near Columbus, on 18 March 1996, a month short of ninety five, and was buried in Oakland Cemetery at Sandusky in the grave next to Charles, who had been dead fifty four years. Her stone, like his, names her role in one word: MOTHER.
Her death record names her father by his surname, Beck, and her mother's maiden name as Butch, the same parents she had named at her wedding eighty years before.
