Jack H. Finley
Jack H. Finley was born in Ohio on 26 March 1933 and grew up in Sandusky, a port town on Lake Erie. He was the seventh of nine children of Charles H. Finley, who was born at Louisville, Kentucky, and Cornelia Beck, also from Kentucky.
In 1940 he was seven and living with his parents in Ward 3 of Sandusky, in the blocks between the New York Central tracks, Columbus Avenue and Hayes Avenue. The family had been in the same place since at least 1935. His brothers and sisters at home were Ruth, 19, Charles E., 18, Georgetta, 16, Robert, 14, James, 12, Frieda, 10, Milina Irene, 3, and Marilyn, 1. All the children were born in Ohio.
His father died on 30 October 1941, when Jack was eight. In April 1950 Jack, now seventeen, was still in Sandusky in his widowed mother's household with his sisters Frieda and Marilyn and his brother Robert.
On 9 February 1952, in Erie County, Jack married Patricia A. Heiberger. He gave his age as eighteen and she gave hers as sixteen. The marriage record names his parents as Charles H. Finley and Cornelia Beck, and hers as Willard E. Heiberger and Florence Sharp. Their first son, Jack Curtis Finley, was born about 1954. Six more children followed: Michael, Terry, Scott, Diana, Natalie and Linda.
Jack died in Sandusky on 13 July 1973, at the age of forty, a married man. He was buried in Meadow Green Cemetery at Huron, a few miles east of Sandusky. Patricia lived another forty two years and never remarried. When she died in 2015 she was buried beside him under a single bronze marker with roses at its corners, praying hands, an open Bible and the words "Together Forever" between their names.
