Daniel Bayless
Daniel Bayless was born on 17 September 1827 in Adams County, Ohio, and lived in the West Union neighborhood all his life. His death certificate names his parents as Daniel Bayless and Jennie Jack, and his obituary calls him "a son of Daniel and Jennie Bayless." His sister Elmira, two years older, married Benjamin Piatt Jr. of Tiffin Township, according to the memorial written for her.
On 17 March 1855 he married Mary Ellen Osman, a daughter of Jabez Daily Osman and Mariah Grooms of Gift Ridge, Monroe Township. She was seventeen and he was twenty-seven. They had ten children. Three daughters died before their father. The seven sons who outlived him were William, George, Charley, Frank, Milton, Vivian and Clarence.
In the Civil War he served in the 182nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a regiment raised in the autumn of 1864. He came home with an illness he never shook. More than fifty years later his doctor wrote the cause of his death as chronic diarrhoea "since 1864." Diarrhoea and dysentery were the commonest sicknesses of the Union camps, and many men who survived them carried them for life.
He farmed near West Union. In his old age his sons who had moved away came home to visit; the local paper noted Vivian in from Portsmouth in 1910 and Milton in 1912.
Daniel Bayless died at his home in West Union on the night of Sunday 8 September 1918, nine days short of his ninety-first birthday. His son Milton gave the details for the certificate. Rev. King, the local Baptist minister, held the funeral at the house on the Tuesday afternoon, and he was buried that day, 10 September, in the Odd Fellows cemetery at West Union, by the undertakers Latour and Lafferty. Mary Ellen died there sixteen months later, in January 1920. No stone for either of them has been found.
