George Coleman Bayless was born on 17 October 1859 in Adams County, Ohio. His parents were Daniel Bayless and Mary Ellen Osman, and his death certificate names them both. His brothers were John William Bayless, Franklin Hamer Roscoe "Frank" Bayless, Clarence Alphonso "Charley" Bayless and Milton D Bayless.

He married Mary Adelina "Addie" Fleming, a daughter of Levi Fleming and Mallissa Salisbury. She was twelve years younger than he was. They had seven children: Della O'Marie (1890), William Lawrence (1893), Bethel Mae (1898), Elma Matilda (1901), Alma Ellanora (1901), Dewey G (1904) and Louella Edna (1908). Della married a Wilcher, Bethel a Woods, Elma a Francis, Alma a Nehus and Louella a Jackson.

George farmed all his life. In February 1920 his daughter Elma married Carey Hall Francis, the son of John Marion Francis and Luella Piatt. Luella's mother was Elmira Bayless, who is called a sister of George's father on her memorial. If that is right, Carey and Elma were second cousins.

George died at home in West Union on the night of 7 July 1944, aged 84, a retired farmer. Dr. M. L. Purdin had attended him for the last two days. His daughter Louella Jackson of West Union gave the details for the certificate. William Lafferty of West Union buried him on 9 July in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. He lies in Section 4 of West Union Cemetery, and Addie, then 73, lies beside him under one granite stone. His daughter Elma and her husband are buried nearby.
