Daniel Poland
Daniel Poland and his wife Sarah were living in Chebacco parish, in the town of Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, at the start of the 1750s. On 17 May 1752 three of their children were baptised at Ipswich on the same day: Daniel, Sarah and Anna. His own birth and his parents are not known.
By December 1753 the family had moved to Wenham, and they arrived with very little. A Wenham man, Lieutenant Dodge, reported that he had taken into his house "Daniel and Sarah Poland and 3 small Children Daniel, Sarah, & Anna Under Low Circumstances, ye last Place of their abode was in Chebacco Parish in Ipswich". Under Massachusetts law a householder who took in newcomers had to report them to the town. The town could then refuse them settlement, and with it any claim on its relief for the poor.
The family stayed, and grew. Their children went on being baptised at Ipswich: Martha on 4 August 1754, Zebulon on 27 June 1756, John on 8 October 1758, Abner on 7 September 1760, William on 23 October 1763 and Samuel on 9 June 1765. By 1765 Daniel and Sarah had nine children.
On Friday 19 August 1768 a Daniel Poland of Beverly drowned while fishing off Little Misery Island, in Salem Sound. Beverly lies against the east ward of Wenham. The newspaper said he left "a Wife and 7 or 8 Children", which fits this family. He was very probably this man.
By July 1772 his wife was a widow. When her youngest son, Solomon, was baptised at Wenham on 12 July 1772, the record named him "s. Sarah, wid. Daniel". She was still a widow on the Wenham tax rolls in 1775 and 1777.
His eldest son, Daniel, married Mary Baley at Wenham in August 1771 and had a daughter, Sarah, called Sally, in 1774. Five of his sons served in the Revolution.
