Daniel Poland
Daniel Poland was baptised at Ipswich, in Essex County, Massachusetts, on 17 May 1752, the son of Daniel and Sarah Poland. His sisters Sarah and Anna were baptised the same day. The family was then living in Chebacco parish in Ipswich. By December 1753 they had moved to Wenham, where Lieutenant Dodge took them into his house: "Daniel and Sarah Poland and 3 small Children Daniel, Sarah, & Anna Under Low Circumstances".
He was the eldest of ten. Martha, Zebulon, John, Abner, William and Samuel were baptised between 1754 and 1765, and Solomon in 1772. His father was very probably the Daniel Poland of Beverly who drowned off Little Misery Island on 19 August 1768, when this Daniel was sixteen. By July 1772 his mother was recorded as a widow.
He married Mary Baley at Wenham in the last week of August 1771. Their daughter Sarah, called Sally, was baptised at Wenham on 26 June 1774, and Molly followed on 10 September 1775 and Anna on 15 October 1780. Sally married Nehemiah Perkins in 1793 and died at Wenham in 1856, aged eighty two. It is her death record, made that year, that names him outright as her father.
He is one of a crowd of Polands in that corner of Essex County. Wenham, Ipswich, Beverly and Gloucester all held households of the name in his lifetime. Wenham sent Nathaniel, Zebulon, James, Moses, Abner and a Daniel Poland to the militia in the 1770s. Zebulon and Abner were his brothers, and five of the brothers served in the Revolution.
