Daniel Satterfield
Daniel Satterfield farmed on Pharaohs Run in Marion County, on the road between Fairmont and Morgantown. The 1850 census puts him at forty five, born in Virginia, with his wife Mary at forty two and seven children still at home.
He was alive on 8 May 1856, when he bought land from Adam Heck. He was dead by 1 January 1858, because on that day a deed was drawn that begins *Mary Satterfield widow of Daniel Satterfield decd*.
That deed exists because of something he left unfinished. He had sold a parcel to Francis Satterfield during his lifetime and never made the paper, and Francis had already passed his claim to William T. Baker, whose blacksmith shop stood nearby. So after Daniel's death his widow and every one of his married children had to appear and convey the land themselves, to complete a bargain he had agreed to and not written down.
The clerk listed them in order, each daughter behind her husband, and then wrote the words that name them all: the heirs of said Daniel Satterfield. The first couple named is Joseph Toothman and Barbary A. his wife.
