Daniel Scofield
Daniel Scofield was baptized at the parish church of St John the Baptist in Halifax, Yorkshire, on 10 April 1614. The register, as quoted in a 2017 study of the family, reads "Daniel [s/o] Richard Scolfeeld [of] Hipp[erholme]". Hipperholme was a township of the great Halifax parish. In 1616 Henry Northend the elder of Northowram left ten pounds to "Oswould, Joseph, Richard, Samuel, and Daniel Scolofeild, the five younger sons of Richard Scolofeild", whom he called his son-in-law. His mother is called Effam Northend in compiled accounts. His brother Richard also came to New England, lived at Ipswich, and settled at Stamford by 1655. A cousin, John Northend, came to Stamford as well.
He was one of the first company of settlers at Stamford, Connecticut. On 7 December 1641 he received two acres there for a homelot and woodland. A homelot was the small lot in the village where a settler built his house; his fields lay outside it.
By 1657 he was the town's marshal, the officer who served the court's warrants and made its arrests. That December he went to Richard Crabb's house at Greenwich to arrest Thomas Marshall, a man the New Haven colony counted a Quaker. He also gave testimony in a dispute over a stray horse, and in February 1660 he and John Holly witnessed George Stuckey's will before Richard Law.
His children were Sarah, who married John Pettit in 1665, Daniel, John, Joseph and Mercy, who was born at the end of November 1657. Huntington's history also names Richard and Mary. He made his will on 4 September 1669. It gave his wife a third of the estate and the use of the house for her lifetime. His daughter Sarah received five pounds, and her two children five pounds more. The rest went to Daniel, John, Joseph and Mercy. His wife and the sons Daniel and John were named executors. His inventory was taken on 10 February 1669/70, so he died that winter. His son Joseph died in King Philip's War. His inventory of March 1675/6 includes "his wages in the service against the common enemy", and he left his estate to his brothers and sisters.
His widow was Sarah. On 30 November 1670 she married Miles Merwin of Milford as his third wife. Her son Daniel had married, or would marry, Merwin's daughter Abigail. Sarah outlived Merwin and died at Milford on 5 March 1697/8. Her maiden name is not known. She is often called Sarah Youngs, but a study in 1998 showed that Rev. John Youngs had no daughter Sarah. Huntington's history calls her Mary, which no record supports.
