Daniel Scofield
Daniel Scofield was born at Stamford, Connecticut, about 1647, a son of Daniel Scofield, one of the town's first settlers, and his wife Sarah. His father made his will on 4 September 1669 and named him an executor with his mother and his brother John. He shared the bulk of the estate with John, Joseph and Mercy. His brother Joseph died in King Philip's War in 1675 or 1676, and left his estate to his brothers and sisters.
In November 1670 his widowed mother married Miles Merwin of Milford as his third wife. Daniel married Merwin's daughter Abigail, so the two families were joined twice. A compiled family history dates the wedding 12 July 1677, but that is the day the Stamford register gives for his brother John's marriage to Hannah Mead, and no marriage of Daniel's is in the printed register.
He served the town for years. In 1696 he and Elisha Holly were appointed to share out among the townsmen the loads of firewood owed to the minister, Mr. Davenport, and to set the days for carrying it. He and Jonas Weed were told to make the men behind on Mr. Davenport's pasture fence set up their posts, or hire it done at their charge. In 1700 he was a surveyor of highways for the Northfield, an auditor, one of the townsmen who ran the town's business, and, with Lieut. Waterbury, a "Sheep master to take care of ye flock". On 8 July 1702 he was put on the committee to build a new meeting house fifty feet square, where the pound stood, with shingles of cedar, and later on the committee that assigned the seats in it.
A younger man of the same name married Hannah Hoyt in 1701, which is why the clerk began calling this one "Sr." The Stamford register records the death of "Daniel, Sr." on 10 October 1714. His inventory was taken on 22 November. On 29 November 1714 his heirs signed an agreement dividing the estate: his widow Abigail; his sons Daniel, Joseph and Samuel; Samuel Hoyt the smith and his wife Mary; Samuel Weed and his wife Abigail; Samuel Bates and his wife Sarah; and Daniel Weed Jr. and his wife Elizabeth.
