Daniel Shed
The first of this name in New England, and the ancestor the whole American family descends from. He appears at Braintree in 1642, a young man barely of age, and in 1645 the General Court granted new lands to twenty families of that town, his name entered among them as Daniel Shode.
That same year he put his name to something more interesting. Thirty two residents of Braintree petitioned the General Court for liberty to leave and begin a new plantation on the thousand acres at Shawomet, later Warwick, that had been granted to Samuel Gorton, the preacher Massachusetts regarded as a heretic and whose grant the Court afterwards confiscated on precisely that ground. The petition was allowed. Nothing came of it: a jurisdiction quarrel with Plymouth Colony broke out, the authorities in England overruled the whole business and restored the land to Gorton, and the petitioners stayed on at Mount Wollaston. Over the following years they scattered instead to Bridgewater, Mendon, Chelmsford and Billerica.
Daniel took the Billerica road. From about 1659 he lived on a homestead there, a house lot of twenty three acres more or less running from the brook to the Concord River, and he held it until he died in 1708. His first wife, Mary, bore seven children at Braintree, the last in October 1658; her family is not proved. In 1659 he married a second wife, Elizabeth. In 1694 he conveyed the homestead to his youngest son Nathan on condition of being maintained on it, and lived out his last fourteen years under that arrangement.
