Nathan Shed
Born at Billerica on 5 February 1668/9, the youngest son of Daniel Shed, the first of the name in New England. He never lived anywhere else. The Shed homestead lay on the east side of the road to Bedford, a house lot of twenty three acres running from the brook to the Concord River, between the land of the Reverend Mr. Whiting on the south and Jacob Browne on the north, and Nathan farmed it for more than forty years.
He came into it by a bargain rather than by a death. On 27 March 1694, when Nathan was twenty five, his father made an agreement conveying him the homestead in exchange for the maintenance of himself and his wife, so the old man handed over the land and kept the right to be fed and housed on it. Daniel lived another fourteen years on those terms and died in 1708.
Nathan married Mary French and they had nine children, four of them sons, and the daughters married into the Manning, Kittredge, Boynton and Hill families of the neighbourhood. In 1732 he did to his own son exactly what his father had done to him, conveying the homestead to William Shed of Billerica by an indenture for the maintenance of himself and his wife. He died on 18 June 1736 at sixty seven. Mary outlived him by four years and died on 21 August 1740.
