David Blair came out of the north of Ireland as a boy, one of the twelve children David Blair the elder carried aboard in 1720. The family account kept at Blandford describes them as Scots who removed to Ireland 'upon that part of the island nearest Scotland', sailed for Boston in 1720, and settled at Worcester within months. Of the immigrant's sons, Matthew and Robert pioneered Blandford, John stayed at Worcester and died there in 1796 at eighty-six, James settled at Rutland, and David 'settled in Western, now Warren, and died there about 1790, being eighty-five years old.'

At Western the town entered two of his sons, Ellicksandar on 22 September 1739 and Absalom on 9 November 1741, the clerk leaving the mother's name blank both times. A David Blair Jr. entered his intention to Mary Black of Paxton in 1766, and by the 1760s and 1770s the marriage register is thick with Blairs.

No record names William Blair's father. William was of Western at his 1754 marriage, born about 1732, and David's was then the only Blair family in the town, so William is taken to be his son.
