Isabella Rankin
Isabella Rankin was born about 1683. She married Robert Blair, a native of Ireland, probably at Aghadowey in County Londonderry. The Blair family history of 1900 calls her "daughter of David Rankin, whose father went from Scotland, in 1685, to Aghadowey, where he died in 1750, aged 84 years."
Her first children were born in Ireland: Matthew about 1704 or 1705, David in 1708 or 1709, and John in 1710. Then came Sarah, Dolly, William in 1718 and James. By June 1720 the family was in Massachusetts, where her son Robert was born at Rutland on 20 June 1720. Elizabeth, Mary and Joseph were born after the move to Worcester, the last in 1727.
In December 1751 her husband signed the home farm over to Joseph, the youngest son. Joseph agreed to work it for the rest of his parents' lives "and to care for them in all ways." Isabella lived another thirteen years. She died on 10 February 1765, aged eighty-two, and was buried in ground that is now part of Worcester Common. Her stone gives her husband's name and not her own: "Here lyes interred the remains of Mrs. Robert Blair, who died February 10, 1765, aged 82 years. Memento Mori." The Latin means "remember that you must die".
Robert outlived her by nine years. When he died, the count of their living descendants came to two hundred and nine.
