David Layton
David Layton was born in 1803. Find a Grave gives his birthplace as Wayne County, Pennsylvania, and a compiled WikiTree profile gives Callicoon, in Sullivan County, New York. The two are a few miles apart across the Delaware. His son William's death certificate says Wayne County.
The Laytons of Callicoon were natives of New Jersey, according to the 1873 county history. They had settled at the forks of the Callicoon Creek, on land of Colonel Duer, a Revolutionary officer who had married a daughter of Lord Stirling, Washington's general.
He married Loretta Billings. Their children were born over more than a quarter century, from about 1830 to 1856. They included John (1830), William (1831), Charles (1836), Hannah (1840, later Mrs. Lester), Maria (1842, Mrs. Teeple), Amelia "Millie" (1844, Mrs. Kellam), Joseph (1846), Theresa (1849, Mrs. Riefler), David K. (1851), James Curtis (1853) and Loretta (1856, Mrs. Ferow, later Thomas). A compiled tree counts fifteen and adds Eliza, Jacob, Sally and Margaret.
By 1850 the family was in Manchester Township, Wayne County, and they were there again in 1860 and 1870. The censuses describe David as a lumberman and farmer. The upper Delaware then was timber country, and its logs went downriver in rafts.
Loretta died in 1860, leaving children as young as four. David lived another eleven years. He died at Equinunk on 9 February 1871 and was buried in Union Cemetery, Manchester Township, where his son William, his grandson Earl and their wives would follow.
