William Layton was born on 3 November 1831 in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. His father was David Layton and his mother Loretta Billings, both given on his death certificate as natives of Wayne County. David's people had come from New Jersey to the forks of the Callicoon Creek, just across the Delaware in Sullivan County, New York. William was one of a long run of children born between about 1830 and 1856.

He was a farmer all his life. He married first Elizabeth Teeple, born 1836, who died in 1862. In 1862 he married Ruth Burdick, the widow of Ellison Teeple, who had died in 1860. Both of them had lost a Teeple spouse. His sister Maria also married a Teeple.

Ruth brought daughters from her first marriage into the house. Together they had Henry (1863-1913), Maude B. (1868-1952) and Earl C. (1876). Find a Grave also gives him a son L. Herbert "Burt" Layton (1857-1900), born before the 1862 marriage and so apparently a child of the first. At his death in 1917 his obituary counted four living children: Mrs. Nettie Van Duser of Newburg, George of Deposit, Mrs. Maud Teeple of Equinunk and Earl of Union.

The Laytons of his generation stayed close to the river. His obituary named three living sisters, Mrs. William Kellam of Hancock, Mrs. Theresa Reafler of Hancock and Mrs. Retta Thomas of Equinunk, and one living brother, David Layton of Lookout.

In March 1917 he fell ill at home at Union. Dr. F. C. Frisbie of Equinunk attended him from 10 to 13 March. William died at seven in the evening on 14 March 1917, of "interstitial nephritis and failing compensation," a chronic kidney disease with the heart giving out under it. His son Earl gave the particulars for the certificate. The funeral was held in the Union Methodist church at two o'clock on Saturday, 17 March, and he was buried in Union Cemetery, Manchester Township. H. Knapp of Equinunk was the undertaker.
