Dea. Joseph Mygatt
Joseph Mygatt came to New England in 1633 in the Griffin. Savage notes that he sailed "with famous Cotton and Hooker", meaning John Cotton and Thomas Hooker, two Puritan ministers leaving England. Cotton became the minister of Boston and Hooker of Newtown, now Cambridge.
He settled at Newtown with Hooker's people and was made a freeman on 6 May 1635. A freeman was a church member admitted to vote and hold office in the colony. In 1636 he went with Hooker's congregation in the great removal to the Connecticut River, where they founded Hartford.
At Hartford he was a deputy to the General Court in 1658 and often afterwards, and a deacon of the church. In 1666 he gave his age as seventy. He had only two children: Jacob, thought to have been born in 1633, and Mary, born in 1637, who married John Deming the younger in 1657.
He died on 7 December 1680, aged eighty four. His widow, Ann, born in 1602, survived him by some years.
