Dea. Samuel Edson
Samuel Edson came to Bridgewater, in Plymouth Colony, from Salem, with his wife Susanna Orcutt. He was one of the first settlers of the town. Mitchell's History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater says he "owned the first mill, and probably built it."
He was one of the town's agents when its purchase of the land from the Indians was confirmed, and he was the first deacon of its church. A deacon was a lay officer chosen by the church to care for its poor and its money and to serve at the communion table.
In 1664 the church ordained the Rev. James Keith, a young Scot educated at Aberdeen, as its first minister. Keith married the deacon's daughter Susanna.
His other children were Samuel, Joseph, Josiah, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah and Bethiah. Elizabeth married Richard Phillips of Weymouth. Mary married Nicholas Byram Jr. in 1676. Sarah married John Dean of Taunton in 1663, and Bethiah married Ezra Dean of Taunton in 1678.
He died in 1692, aged eighty. His wife died in 1699, aged eighty one.
