Dea. Thomas Thaxter
Thomas Thaxter was the first of the name at Hingham, Massachusetts. He came over by 1638 with his wife Elizabeth and their two eldest children, John, born in England in 1626, and Elizabeth, born in 1629. In 1638 the town granted him a house lot near the training field at Hingham Centre, the common where the militia drilled.
He later bought from Capt. John Mason, who had moved to Windsor in Connecticut, the dwelling house and land that had once been Mr. Robert Peck's. The deed was acknowledged before Mr. Endecott on 6 August 1647. The property lay on Bachelor Street, now Main Street, near the meeting house of the First Parish. Two years later he bought land at Broad Cove and near the Weymouth river, and in 1652 the house and land where his son John afterwards lived.
He was a linen weaver. He was made a freeman of the colony on 18 May 1642, which gave him a vote in its elections, and he served the church as a deacon.
Thomas and Elizabeth had six children: John in 1626, Elizabeth in 1629, Thomas in 1632, Sarah in 1635, Daniel in 1638 and Samuel, born at Hingham on 19 May 1641. Thomas the younger died on 6 January 1646/7, aged about fourteen. Daniel died in 1663.
Thomas died on 4 February 1653/4 without a will. A petition was put to the county court for the division of his estate, which was valued at 230 pounds. His widow married William Ripley that September.
