Deacon Samuel Bryant

Samuel Bryant was a deacon of the church at Plympton and the first of four deacons this family produced in three generations. He died on 3 March 1750 aged seventy six years and one month, which puts his birth in February 1673/4, and the town book enters him as husband of Joanna and father of Deacon Nathaniel.

His wife's surname was never written down. She was Joanah in every entry across thirty seven years, and she died in December 1736 in her sixty fifth year, thirteen years before him. Seven of their children are in the books between 1699 and 1712, and the family straddles the making of a town: the first three were entered at Plymouth and the later ones at Plympton, which was set off as a separate town in 1707.

He made his will on 25 May 1744, six years before he died, and it was probated on 2 April 1750.

The clerk who annotated his death entry traced him upward as well as down, making him son of Lieutenant John and Abigail of Plympton, and grandson of a John of Scituate who married Mary, a daughter of George Lewis of Scituate and afterwards of Barnstable. That Scituate line rests on the clerk's annotation alone and is not settled.
