Delarez Lapointe
Marie Delarez Lapointe was born at New Bedford, Massachusetts, about 1881. Her parents were written down in 1903 as Phuien Lapoint and Julia Lamoureau. New Bedford's cotton mills drew thousands of French Canadian families in those years.
By 1903 she was living at Hyde Park and working as a speeder tender, minding a machine that drew out cotton before spinning. On 8 June 1903, at 21, she married Edward Obin, 22, a labourer from Canada. The clerk wrote her name as Laura Lapoint. Census takers later wrote it Delasay, Delerac and Delarez.
Her first son, Joseph Arthur, was born at Hyde Park on 22 September 1905. In 1910 she was 27 and living at Duxbury with Edward and three little boys. By 1920 the family was back at Hyde Park with nine children. In 1922 she lost two babies, Rita in February and Joseph in April.
Edward died in 1954. Delarez Obin died in Boston in November 1961, and the Boston Herald carried her death notice on 16 and 17 November. It named her children Arthur, William, Francis, Raymond and Charles, and her daughters Mrs. Laura Crosby, Mrs. Clara Blanchard, Mrs. Madora Watt and Mrs. Flora Grenier. She is buried with Edward in Fairview Cemetery at Hyde Park, under a stone that reads simply "Delarez, 1881, 1961."
