Joseph Arthur Obin
Joseph Arthur Obin was born on 22 September 1905 at Hyde Park, Massachusetts. Hyde Park was then a town of its own on the southern edge of Boston; the city annexed it in 1912. His parents were Edward J. Obin, a French Canadian labourer, and Delarez Lapointe of New Bedford. His father's name was entered on the birth record as Joseph E. Obin. Obin is probably the French Canadian name Aubin, written the way it sounds. A younger brother, Charles Joseph Obin, was born at Duxbury on 14 November 1908.
In the family he was Arthur. His son Francis's obituary named his parents as "the late Arthur and Mary (Lamore) Obin," and his eldest son, Joseph Arthur Jr., was called Joe.
About 1933 he married Mary Dora Lamore, who had been born at Hanover in 1913 and grew up in Pembroke. She was his first cousin. Her mother, Mary Louise Obin, was his father's sister, and both were children of John Obin and Pauline Dacelier, who had come from Canada in 1889. Their first child, Joseph Arthur Jr., was born at North Pembroke on 20 September 1934. William F. followed at Hyde Park on 1 October 1937, then Rita M. about 1940, Robert L. at Hyde Park in 1941, Hazel L. in Boston on 6 May 1943, and Francis R. in Boston on 27 February 1947. A son John E. is also named among the brothers in later family obituaries.
In 1940 the family was living in Boston. By April 1950 they had moved out to Pembroke, the town Mary had grown up in. The census taker, Helen J. Wyman, reached their house on 6 April 1950. Joseph, 44, was the head of the house. He was a wooden box maker in a wood box factory and had worked 48 hours the week before. Mary, 36, kept house, and all six children were at home. Pembroke's box factories had employed Mary's father, Charles Lamore, and her grandfather, John Obin, thirty years earlier. Next door lived Mary Lamore, 70, a widow born in French Canada.
Joseph Arthur Obin died in January 1973, his last home in Plymouth County. His brother Charles, a sergeant in the Army Air Forces in the Second World War, died on 8 February 1973, a few weeks after him, and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Roslindale. Mary lived until 2001.
