Dewey Coleman was born on 23 August 1897 in Heard County, Georgia, the youngest son of John Thomas Coleman and Sarah Charlotte Rowe. His parents had married in Meriwether County in 1879 and farmed in the Rockalo district of Heard County, on the Alabama line, where the 1900 census found Dewey, three, in a house with eight brothers and sisters. A sister born the year after him lived only a few months.

Some time after 1910 the family moved to Oklahoma, to Grady County south-west of Oklahoma City. Dewey entered the Army at Pocasset, Grady County, on 18 December 1918, five weeks after the Armistice, and his service earned him a line in the Veterans Administration's master index. The 1920 census found him, twenty-two, back on his father's farm in Grady County with four grown brothers and sisters.

He married Frieda Wilhelmina Charlotte Snook of Topeka, Kansas, a girl ten years younger, and their daughter Wilma Charlotte was born at Oklahoma City in September 1926. By 1928 they had moved to Topeka, Frieda's home, where their son John Harland was born in July. The 1930 census found the four of them living in the house of Frieda's parents, Harland and Rosa Snook; by 1940 Dewey had his own household in Topeka Township. He died at Topeka on 20 January 1957, aged fifty-nine, and was buried in the Peace section of Memorial Park Cemetery, two lots from the Snooks, under a flat double stone cut COLEMAN with his name and dates on the right and Frieda's name and birth year on the left.
