John Thomas Coleman was born on 28 January 1859 in Georgia. On 8 May 1879 he married Sarah Charlotte Rowe in Meriwether County, and they farmed in the Rockalo militia district of Heard County, on the Alabama line south-west of Atlanta. The 1900 census listed him, forty-one, with his wife Sallie, forty-two, and nine children aged from twenty to three, and the 1910 census found them in the same district.

Between 1910 and 1920 he moved the family to Grady County, Oklahoma, where the 1920 census listed him at sixty with Sarah and five grown children, Henry, Era, Claudie, Harvey and Dewey, still at home. Sarah died in April 1923 and was buried back in Georgia, at Hopewell Cemetery near Ephesus in Heard County. He died at his home south of Chickasha on Thursday 1 November 1934, aged seventy-five years, ten months and three days. The Chickasha paper gave him three lines: funeral services at Chickasha on the Friday and burial in a cemetery north-west of town, which is Holcomb Cemetery.
