Dorothy Ann Chase
Dorothy Ann Chase was born in New Hampshire on 22 November 1814. Her gravestone gives her age at death as 79 years, 6 months and 27 days, which agrees with that date.
She was the daughter of Samuel Chase and Betsey Hadlock of Bath, Grafton County, New Hampshire. Her mother's people, the family of Jonathan Hadlock, had come up to Bath from Weare, and her Hadlock uncles held land at Bath beside her father. Her father had served three years in the Continental army and drew a soldier's pension, and he was a joiner by trade. The family was poor: their house burned when she was two, and the town of Bath helped them for three years after. In August 1820 her father listed his eight children for the county court, and she was the seventh: "Anna Chase aged 6 years verry subject to the Phthisic," a word then used for asthma or a wasting cough. She went by Ann all her life. Several of the family moved north to Jay and Troy in Orleans County, Vermont, and her father was living at Jay in the 1830s.
She married Henry Dearborn Hadlock, a New Hampshire man a year older, at Jay in Orleans County, Vermont, on 16 November 1837. The town clerk wrote her name as Anna Chase, and she went by Ann. Their eldest child was born in Vermont about 1840 and the next five in New York. In 1860 the family was in the village of Markesan, Green Lake County, Wisconsin, Ann aged 45 with six children at home, the youngest Calista and George. In 1871 they moved to Russell, Kansas.
Henry died in 1883. She outlived him by eleven years and died on 18 June 1894. She is buried near him in Russell City Cemetery under a rounded stone that reads: "Dorothy Ann, wife of H. D. Hadlock. Died June 18, 1894. Aged 79 ys. 6 mo. 27 ds." A photograph of her with Henry survives: a thin, straight-backed woman in a dark dress, her hair parted and drawn down over the ears.
