Dorothy Stevens
Dorothy Stevens was the wife of Joseph Spiller of Chelsea, in Orange County, Vermont. Her maiden name comes from a Bixby family genealogy printed in 1914 and from two Find a Grave memorials of her children. Her own stone gives only her married name.
She bore at least five children at Chelsea between about 1795 and 1805, and probably a sixth about 1812. Her second daughter, born on 26 November 1799, was named Dorothy after her.
She died at Chelsea on 19 June 1817. Her slate in the Wiggins Cemetery reads: "Dorothy / Consort of / JOSEPH SPILLER / died / June 19, 1817 / Aged 43 years". Consort meant wife. The top of the stone is cut with fans and rosettes and a band of pointed arches. By the age on it she was born about 1773 or 1774.
Her children outlived her by a long way. Her daughter Charity died in 1896 at ninety-three, and Thirza died in 1894 at eighty-nine. Her daughter Dorothy, seventeen when her mother died, lived to eighty.
