Dorothy Spiller
Dorothy Spiller was born on 26 November 1799, according to a family genealogy printed in 1914. Her son's biography, printed in 1907, says she was "born in Chelsea, Vermont, in 1800" and that "she was one of a large family of children, all of whom lived to a good old age."
Her parents were Joseph Spiller and Dorothy Stevens of Chelsea, as a Bixby genealogy of 1914 and two memorials give them. She carried her mother's given name. Her brothers and sisters were Sarah, called Sally, Joseph, Charity and Thirza, and probably Celia. The biography was right about them: Charity died at ninety-three and Thirza at eighty-nine, and Dorothy herself lived to eighty.
Her mother died at Chelsea on 19 June 1817, when Dorothy was seventeen. Her slate in the Wiggins Cemetery calls her "Dorothy Consort of JOSEPH SPILLER".
According to the 1907 biography, Selden Huntley "lived at first in Concord, New Hampshire, removed to Chelsea, where he met and married his wife." She bore eight children between 1823 and 1842, among them George, born on 4 February 1831, who went to western Pennsylvania and kept a hardware store at Ebensburg. Her daughter Alma died on Christmas Day 1853, at twenty-one.
Selden died at Brookfield in May 1862. Dorothy lived on as a widow for eighteen years and died on 15 July 1880. Her stone in the East Brookfield cemetery gives her age as eighty years and seven months, which agrees with the genealogy's date of birth.
