Dr. Augustus Milton McClain
Augustus Milton McClain was born on 11 June 1832 in Clermont County, Ohio, on the Ohio River above Cincinnati. He became a physician and practised at Enfield, a small town in White County, in the far south-east of Illinois.
On 19 February 1861, in White County, he married Emma Priscilla Johnson, who had been born in July 1842. Their children were daughters. In 1880 the census found the doctor, 48, and E. P., 38, at Enfield with eight girls: A. J., 17; S. J., 14; M. E., 12; A. M., 10; F. M., 8; Rosa, 6; Elizabeth, 4; and Minnie, 2. Several of them can be named in full: Ada J., the eldest, later Mrs. Baskins; Estella Jane, called Stella, born in 1866; Mary Effie, born in 1867; Florence May, born in 1871; Rose Clara, born in October 1873; and Elizabeth Ellen, later Mrs. Torrence. When Ada and Elizabeth died in Illinois in the twentieth century, Ada's death certificate gave her father's birthplace as Clermont County, Ohio, and Elizabeth's gave Sardinia, a village just over the line in Brown County.
Augustus died on 18 April 1894, aged 61 years, 10 months and 7 days. He is buried in the Enfield Cemetery under a tall stone with the square and compass of the Masons cut at the top. It reads AUGUSTUS M. McCLAIN M.D., BORN JUNE 11, 1832, DIED APR. 18, 1894, AGED 61 YS. 10 MS. 7 DS. Emma lived ten years more and lies beside him.
