Rose Clara McClain
Rose Clara McClain was born on 26 October 1873 at Enfield, White County, in southern Illinois. Her stone at Watonga gives her year of birth as 1876. She was one of the daughters of Dr. Augustus Milton McClain, the Enfield physician, and Emma Priscilla Johnson. In 1880 the doctor's house held eight girls, from seventeen-year-old A. J. down to Minnie, who was two. Rosa was six.
Her father died in April 1894. Two years before that, on 23 August 1892, Rose married W. Byron Blakeley at Enfield. She was nineteen and he was twenty-two. Their daughter Lillian was born in 1895 and their son Eugene Wallace in 1897.
In 1901 she married James A. Peck, an Illinois man with a son of his own, and settled at Watonga, Blaine County, Oklahoma. Her daughter Lillian died there in 1906, aged about eleven. Her son Jamie was born at Watonga on 31 May 1907. In 1910 her household held her husband, Thomas, Edward and Ralph Peck, her son Eugene Blakeley and little Jamie.
In 1924 she was named as Jamie's parent when he was enrolled at school at Watonga, and when he married at Christmas 1927 she was named as his mother. James died in February 1940. Rose lived on at Watonga and died there on 16 June 1949, aged 75. She is buried in the Watonga IOOF Cemetery beside James. Her stone reads MOTHER, ROSE C. PECK, 1876, 1949.
