Druza Ann Rogers
Druza Ann Rogers was born on 12 August 1870 in Texas. Her obituary gives the place as Hood County, on the Brazos southwest of Fort Worth. Her parents' names are not on record. When she died, her son Bill gave her father as "Unknown Rogers" and her mother as "Unknown".
On 14 October 1894, in Johnson County, she married Samuel Dale Myres, a young saddler who had settled at Weatherford the year before. The state index spells her name "Duza Rogers". In 1897 the couple moved west to Sweetwater, where he bought his own saddlery the next year. Her obituary says she came to Sweetwater in 1900.
She had three children: Samuel Dale Jr., called Ted, born at Sweetwater in 1899; William James, called Bill, in 1903; and a daughter, Melrose. Her husband's shop grew famous, and from 1908 to 1911 he was the town's mayor.
The marriage ended in divorce. By about 1921 he had married again. The Handbook of Texas records "a generous divorce settlement for Drusa." She did not take another name. For the rest of her life she was Mrs. S. D. Myres.
In 1950 the census found her in Dallas, where her son Ted lived. About 1954 she moved to El Paso, where both her sons were by then. She lived at 8101 La Paloma Loop. A doctor attended her from late December 1957. She died there on the night of Tuesday, 18 March 1958, aged 87, of pulmonary edema and heart failure brought on by arteriosclerotic heart disease.
Her body went back to Sweetwater by train. The Rev. Charley Harnest of the First Christian Church conducted her funeral on the Friday, and she was buried in Sweetwater Cemetery, in Block 103. Her headstone reads "MOTHER" above her name, carved "GRUZA ANN MYRES", with her dates.
