Sarah Ann Matthews

Sarah Ann Matthews was born on 2 April 1837 in Jackson County, Alabama. Her father was Jerry Matthews, a planter who owned land and slaves. Her mother was Jane Williams, called Jinie or Jennie, one of the daughters of Sherrod Williams of Franklin County, Tennessee. The family was Methodist and Presbyterian.

Her father died in 1845, according to his gravestone, when she was eight. Her husband later remembered it as 1847.

On 16 August 1853, at sixteen, she married Samuel B. Gover in Franklin County, Tennessee. Their son Banks Tolbert Gover was born that year. A second Gover son, W. Jerry Gover, was born in Tennessee. Samuel Gover died young.

On 26 November 1860 she married William Leroy Rogers, a young farmer and Primitive Baptist from the neighbourhood. They had ten children. The first, Samuel Davis, was born in 1861. Druza Ann was born in Alabama in August 1870. Two daughters and a son carried names from her own family: Clamenza, after her sister, and Michael Newton, after her brother.

In June 1872 she left the Presbyterian church and joined her husband's old Baptist church. That September the family left for Texas. They settled in Hood County, near Acton and Fall Creek. The 1880 census finds her there with her husband and ten children.

She died at Acton on 17 August 1892, aged fifty five. She was buried at Fall Creek Cemetery. Her stone is carved with an open Bible and reads "SARAH A. Wife of W. L. ROGERS". Her husband was buried beside her in 1924.
