Ebenezer Cole

Ebenezer Cole was of Plympton in Plymouth County, and the father of the Joanah Cole who married Nathaniel Bryant there in 1759. He was born at Plympton on 17 October 1711. The town book enters him as the child of John Cole junior and Patience, who was Patience Barbor of Bridgewater and had married John on 27 January 1709/10. His grandparents were John Cole and Susannah Gray. The 1908 Cole genealogy merges his father into his grandfather, but the Plympton book keeps the two Johns apart, and so does the settlement of Susannah Cole's estate in 1728, which had to name every child.

The town's book of intentions entered his marriage to Ruth Churchill on 6 January 1732. The clerk, in the way of that record, spent his ink on the bride's ancestry rather than the groom's. She is given as the daughter of William Churchill, son of William, and of Ruth, daughter of John Bryant and sister of Captain George Bryant. Of Ebenezer himself the entry says only that he was of Plympton.

The Cole genealogy gives the couple eleven children: Ebenezer, Obadiah, Barnabas, Lemuel, Joanna, Jesse, Amaziah, William, Seth, Hannah and Ruth. The Churchill genealogy, under his wife, records that they lived in Plympton for a while and that he died at Chesterfield about 1790. Chesterfield is in the Hampshire County hills, a hundred miles west, and it is where his daughter Joanah and her husband went. He followed with Ruth and three of their sons. He died at Chesterfield on 31 December 1790, and Ruth outlived him by nearly sixteen years, dying on 2 September 1806.
