John Cole Jr.
John Cole junior was the eldest son of John Cole and Susannah Gray of Plympton, born somewhere about 1685 to 1690. He is in no town book: Plympton did not exist as a town until 1707 and the Plymouth book has no Cole family of John and Susanna, so his birth falls in the gap between the two registers.
On 27 January 1709/10 he married Patience Barbor of Bridgewater, and the Bridgewater clerk wrote it down himself. Their son Ebenezer was baptised at Plympton on 17 October 1711, entered as the child of John junior and Patience, which is the entry that distinguishes the two men in the town's own hand.
When his mother died intestate in 1727 the estate had to be divided among all nine children, and as eldest son he took a double share: half the Plympton grist mill with its dam and pond and the privilege of the old sawmill dam, the land he was already living on, the ground in the neck running from Lakenham Brook to the mill way, and a quarter of the meadow at Hunting House Brook.
He was still alive in May 1755, selling two acres of fresh meadow bounded southerly by Doteys Brook, with Patience surrendering her right of dower. She signed with a mark.
