Edith Squire
Edith Squire was baptised at Charlton Mackrell, Somerset, on 29 May 1587, a daughter of Henry Squire. Her father was a husbandman and a blacksmith who later lived in the next parish, Kingweston. Four sisters were baptised at Charlton Mackrell to the same father: Sarah in 1589, Ann in 1591, Margaret in 1596 and Frances in 1597/8.
On 19 October 1609, at Charlton Mackrell, she married Henry Adams of Barton St David. They had nine children. Thomas was baptised at Barton St David in March 1612, entered as "the sonne of Henry & Edith Addames". Between 1614 and 1622 the family moved to Kingweston, where John was baptised in 1622 and Edward in 1629. Joseph was born about 1626.
Her sister Ann married Aquila Purchase at Kingweston in January 1613/14 and went with him to Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1633. In 1638 Edith followed, with her husband and eight of their children. Her sister Margaret, the wife of John Shepherd, came the same year. Three of Henry Squire's daughters ended their lives in New England. Ann married a second husband, Thomas Oliver of Boston, and died on 20 December 1662.
The family settled at Mount Wollaston, in Braintree. Henry was buried there on 8 October 1646. His will provided for Edith as his widow, but only while she stayed one. If she married again, the house lot and the field on the road to the Weymouth ferry were to pass to Joseph, Edward and Ursula.
About 1651 she married John Fussell of Weymouth and Medfield, a man born about 1575. The marriage cost her the Braintree homestead, and her son Joseph took the farm. She went to Medfield with her new husband.
She died at Medfield on 21 January 1672/3, recorded as "Edith wife of John Fussell". Three years later, on 21 February 1675/6, Medfield was attacked and burned in King Philip's War. John Fussell died in the flames of his own house. William Hubbard wrote of it in 1677: "A poor old man of near an hundred years old was burnt."
