Edmund Bement
Edmund Bement lived at Enfield, which was governed as part of Massachusetts in his lifetime. Francis Olcott Allen's history of the town makes him a son of John Bement, "first settler on the lot now occupied by his descendants," who came in 1682, died in 1684 and left three sons, John, William and Edmund. A deed of the 1730s from "Benjamin Bement to his uncle Edmond Bement" fits that account.
He married three times. The town clerk entered the first: "Prudence Morgan ... ye 1 of november 1699." She was a daughter of Isaac Morgan. The second followed: "Edman Bement and Prissellah worner was joyned in marrag ye fourteenth day of Jenewery 1702/3." With Priscilla he had Martha, born 7 November 1703, Jonathan in 1705, Prudence in 1708, Dennis, later Capt. Dennis Bement, and Edmund, born 9 November 1713.
Priscilla died by 1719. In November of that year the clerk wrote: "Kdmond Beament & Margery Pasko were joyned in marrage."
He served the town as constable and as lister, the officer who listed each man's property for the tax rate, and in 1720/21 as town measurer. When the meeting house was seated in 1719, each family placed by its standing, he was among the men of rank. In 1744 "Edmond Bement husbandman and wife Margery" deeded land to his son Dennis. He died about 1745. A later deed describes "the homelot of Edmond Bement dec[ease]d."
