Edmund Scott
Edmund Scott first appears at Rattlesden, a village in Suffolk, England, in 1567. In 1569 he served as a questman. Questmen were parish officers who helped the churchwardens and reported offences to the church courts. In 1588 and 1589 he was a churchwarden himself. The churchwardens kept the church in repair, handled the parish money and answered for the parish to the bishop.
His wife was Joan. Their children included Edmund, Henry, Dinay, Anne, Rose, George and Nicholas. Henry, probably born about 1565, married Martha Whatlock at Rattlesden on 25 July 1594.
Joan was buried at Rattlesden on 15 May 1615, entered as "an old woman". Edmund outlived her by six years. He was buried on 14 August 1621, aged "about ninety-seven years". Walter Goodwin Davis, who printed the entry in 1947, thought the age "possibly an exaggeration." If it were right, he was born about 1524.
His son Henry died three years after him and was buried at Rattlesden in December 1624. In 1634 Henry's widow Martha sailed for New England with two of her children and ten grandchildren.
