Edward Dudley Taber
Edward Dudley Taber was born on 22 November 1847 in Illinois. His father was William L. Taber, born in Ohio in 1817.
In September 1867, at nineteen, he enlisted in Company A of the 30th U.S. Infantry. His headstone calls his war the Sioux War. He served three years and was honorably discharged in September 1870 at Fort Fetterman, an army post on the North Platte River in Wyoming Territory. The fort stood in the Bozeman Trail country where the army had fought Red Cloud's War against the Lakota Sioux.
On 2 January 1871, in Knox County, Illinois, he married Laura Jemima Witherell. She was sixteen. Within three years they had moved to Ellis County, Texas, where their daughter Laura Blanche was born on 1 October 1873. She is the only child the records show.
He farmed in Ellis County. In 1880 his household held his wife, their daughter Blanche, and his father William, then 63. His father died in 1899 and was buried at Ennis. In 1900 Edward was living in Justice Precinct 3 of the county. His daughter married the lawyer William Madison Tidwell.
Laura died in February 1928, after fifty-seven years of marriage. Edward died on 16 March 1934, aged 86. His will was filed at once, set for hearing on 2 April and admitted to probate. His daughter was confirmed as independent executrix, with her husband as attorney. The appraisers, J. M. Collins and Olen Bailey, inventoried his estate on 4 April. It included Lots 1 to 4 of Block 57 in the city of Ennis.
He was buried in Myrtle Cemetery at Ennis, in the Old Addition, beside his wife and near his father. His headstone reads "EDWARD DUDLEY TABER / NOV. 22, 1847 / MAR. 16, 1934 / A TRUE HUSBAND; A LOVING FATHER".
