Edward J. Obin
Edward J. Obin was born in Canada in 1881, the son of John Obin and Pauline Dacelier. His parents brought the family to the United States in 1889. His sister Mary Louise was three years younger.
In 1903 he was 22, a labourer living in Blackstone, a mill town on the Rhode Island line. On 8 June 1903 he married Laura Lapoint, 21, at Hyde Park. She was a speeder tender in a cotton mill, born at New Bedford. The priest was James J. Chittick of Hyde Park. In the family she was Delarez, and that is the name on their gravestone.
Their first son, Joseph Arthur, was born at Hyde Park on 22 September 1905. His birth was entered under the name Joseph E. Obin. By 1910 the family had moved to Duxbury, on the coast of Plymouth County, near his parents and sister. That spring the census taker found Edward, 29, with Delarez, 27, and three small sons: Arthur, 4, Joseph W., 3, and Joseph E., 1.
By 1920 they were back at Hyde Park, with nine children in the house. Two babies died in 1922: Rita, born in 1921, on 25 February, and Joseph, born that year, on 22 April. In 1930 the family was still in Boston, with eight children at home.
Edward J. Obin died in 1954 and was buried in Fairview Cemetery at Hyde Park. Delarez outlived him by seven years and was buried in the same grave. Their son Arthur married his first cousin, Mary Dora Lamore, the daughter of Edward's sister Mary Louise.
