Edward Varley
Edward Varley was born in Ireland about 1822. By the 1850s he was in Milford, a mill town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on the Souhegan River. His son John was born there on 16 August 1855. In 1860 he was living at Milford as Edwin Varley, 38, born in Ireland, with his wife Mary, 30, also from Ireland, John, 6, and Julia, 1. Patrick followed about 1861 and Mary J. about 1865, both born in New Hampshire.
Edward does not appear with the family again. In 1870 his wife Mary was the head of a household at Wilton, the next town west, with Julia, Patrick and Mary J. In 1880 she was at Greenville, still a widow with the same three children. When and where Edward died is unknown. He was alive at Milford in 1860, his youngest child was born about 1865, and by 1870 his wife was keeping house alone at Wilton.
His name outlived him in the family. His son Patrick Edward Varley carried it as a middle name, and Patrick's eldest son was born Edwin. When Patrick married at Waltham in 1892 the clerk wrote the groom's parents as Edward and Mary Quirk.
Another Irish family of Varleys lived at Wilton in 1860 and 1870: Patrick Varley, his wife Mary Rooney, and their children John R., Edward, William and Bridget. A John Varley, born in Ireland in March 1808, died in New Hampshire in March 1870. No record yet links any of them to Edward.
