Patrick Edward Varley
Patrick Edward Varley was born about 1861 at Milford, New Hampshire, the son of Edward Varley and Mary E. Quirk, both born in Ireland. The censuses never agreed on his year: 1860, 1861, 1862, August 1863. His father was gone by 1870, when his mother, a widow of 27, was keeping house at Wilton with Julia, 11, Patrick, 10, and Mary J., 5. In 1880 the family was at Greenville, the mill village on the Souhegan, and Patrick, 19, was working in the cotton mill.
He did not stay in the mill. His elder brother John was a hairdresser at Waltham, Massachusetts, and by 1882 Patrick was there too, a hairdresser boarding on Main Street at the corner of Cross. By 1886 he had his own shop on Main Street at the corner of Common, with a journeyman, Albion P. Cole, working for him. From 1888 the shop was at 677 Main Street and he lived with his widowed mother at 44 Taylor Street. She died there in October 1890. He tried Cambridge for a year or two in the early 1890s, then came back to Waltham for good.
On 28 June 1892, aged 30, he married Mary Elizabeth Mitchell, 22, a Waltham laborer's daughter, at Waltham. Their children were Edwin Clement, born 30 October 1893, Arthur Paul, 1896, Chester Joseph, 1898, Warren Francis, 1901, Mary Patricia, 1905, and Eugene. The shop moved up Moody Street with the town: 179 Moody in 1899, 236 Moody from 1910, 448 Moody from 1925, 454 Moody by 1939, when he was about 78 and still listed as a barber, with Philip and Anthony Aliamo cutting hair for him. The family home from the 1920s was 156 Myrtle Street. His sister Julia, a weaver at the Boston Manufacturing Company, died in 1915 "leaving a brother Patrick E. Varley of this city"; his sister Mary J., also a weaver, died in 1945 the same way. Arthur died in 1928 at 31. Mary died in 1939.
Patrick lived to about 94. The census of April 1950 found him at Waltham, and he died there in March 1955. The notice read: "In Waltham, Patrick E., husband of the late Mary (Mitchell) Varley, 156 Myrtle st. Funeral from the Walsh Funeral Home, 20 High st., Thursday at 8 a.m. Mass of Requiem in St. Charles' Church at 9 o'clock." He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham, in Section 6, Lot 726, the lot his mother opened in 1890, under the granite monument lettered VARLEY. Twelve of the family lie in its six graves.
